The Kansas City Chiefs will head into the 2023 NFL season with high hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions, with the team still having a prime Patrick Mahomes under center and arguably the greatest tight end of all time in Travis Kelce leading the receiving corps.
With those two superstars alone, the Chiefs have a great chance of doing big things during the 2023 campaign, but at some point, the defense has to be formidable enough to stop opposing defenses, especially this season, where there will be quite a lot of potent offenses in the AFC.
This is where the problem comes in for the Chiefs, with the team’s best defensive player, defensive tackle Chris Jones, currently in a contract dispute with the team as both sides have been unable to see eye-to-eye on a new deal, which appears to be bleeding over into Week 1.
Jones has refused to report to the team until a new contract gets done, which has led to head coach Andy Reid addressing the situation with his best defensive player by saying the following, according to Jordan Foote of Arrowhead Report.
Andy Reid on the DL without Chris Jones:
“You move on. As a coach, when the player’s not here, then the next guy’s up and rolling. Chris is a great player, but we’ve got other great players.”
Added, “To think that you’re gonna fill in for Chris, that’s not what you’re doing.”

Reid seems to be going with the right approach here as his hands are tied when it comes to the contract situation with Jones, so he has to do what he can to fill the void for the time being, which will be no easy task for the veteran head coach.
Fortunately, there’s still time before the start of the season to get a deal done, but the clock is ticking for the Chiefs.
