The Kansas City Chiefs lost their regular season opener to the Detroit Lions.

This was shocking to many fans across the league, especially given the Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl champions.

However, the Chiefs entered the game without Travis Kelce, their top target-getter over the past several seasons.

Many fans and analysts pointed to his absence as the reason they lost this game.

In a post-game press conference shared via Pro Football Talk, Andy Reid indicated that he didn’t feel the same.

“No excuses at all,” Reid said, adding, “We’ve got guys that can play.”

Patrick Mahomes spread the ball around in Kelce’s absence, targeting 12 different players throughout the game.

One of his pass attempts was to Kadarius Toney, where the ball bounced off his hands and into the arms of a Lions defender.

This turned into a pick-six, which Reid pointed out as one of the biggest turning points of the game.

At the time of the interception, the Chiefs were driving with an opportunity to bring this to a two-score game.

This ultimately proved to be the difference, as the Lions completed the narrow victory, 21-20.

For Chiefs fans, a loss to the Lions is not the way they wanted to start the season, especially on a night where they celebrated a Super Bowl victory.

Hopefully, this is a sign to the team that they cannot take their foot off the gas, a wakeup call for the roster.

Getting Kelce back should help solve some of their woes, especially as they travel to Jacksonville for a Week 2 matchup.
