Some people have speculated that Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves might be the breakout star of Team USA in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup.

They say that Team USA doesn’t have a definitive leader right now and Edwards is a perfect fit.

That is especially true after the season he just had.

But Edwards isn’t thinking of leading the team.

In fact, he isn’t thinking about anything but just scoring the ball.

Speaking to Bally Sports North, via NBACentral, Edwards talked about his plans:

“I can score the ball. I don’t care about the leader. That’s what I do, I score the ball. So, why would I come out here and try to do something else?”

Edwards is hot on the heels of a very strong season.

In 2022-23, Edwards averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists on 45.9% from the floor.

The year didn’t bring him a much-desired Finals appearance but it did earn him his first All-Star selection.

It also showed fans a side of Edwards they haven’t seen much before.

He is clearly more comfortable being the centerpiece of the team and that could be something that helps him and the rest of Team USA in the World Cup.

From Paolo Banchero to Mikal Bridges, Tyrese Haliburton, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jalen Brunson, and others, Team USA is loaded with some genuine talent but few players who regularly perform as leaders for their squads.

This could be the time for any of them to shine but many people predict it’ll be Edwards who shines brightest.

But he has the right idea: instead of thinking of earning fortune and fame, he’s just trying to make sure that his team wins as much as possible.
