Six games into their 2023 season, it’s fair to say that the Los Angeles Chargers and their 2-4 record haven’t lived up to their potential.

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler, in particular, has had a bit of a rough start to the year as he’s already missed three games due to injury.

After finishing the 2022 campaign with 18 touchdowns, Ekeler has only managed to find the end zone once this season.

This past weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs saw the Los Angeles running back continue to struggle, as he only managed to rush for 45 yards on 14 carries.

Ekeler was asked after the game if the team still has faith in head coach Brandon Staley and the running back responded by saying: “We have no choice, right?”

On Wednesday, Ekeler cleared up any confusion about his comments after the loss to the Chiefs (via NFL Network’s Bridget Condon).

“I think the clip got taken out of context. It doesn’t matter how I feel, like what matters is I have to go out and do my job. It’s my job to go play well, and then that will, in tune, make [Brandon Staley] look even better.”

The main message that it seems like Ekeler was trying to get across with his original postgame comments this past weekend was that his opinion about the Chargers’ head coach or anyone else on the team’s roster or coaching staff doesn’t matter because it’s his job to still go out an execute what is being asked of him to the best of his ability.

If he doesn’t like the head coach and he performs poorly because of it, it’s not going to matter because they’re both likely going to be out of a job.

Ekeler and Los Angeles will attempt to get things back on track this week when they host a 2-5 Chicago Bears team on Sunday night.
