A new era has apparently begun for the New England Patriots.

They have a new starting quarterback, presumably at least, in Drake Maye, the No. 3 pick in last month’s draft, but there is always a chance new addition Jacoby Brissett could start under center, at least initially.

Bailey Zappe remains from last season’s quarterback room, and he doesn’t seem to be taking the competition at the position personally, and he also knows that there are things he needs to improve on from last season, per NBC Sports Boston.

For the last two seasons, Zappe served as a backup under Mac Jones, who was New England’s previous starting quarterback.

When Jones was benched multiple times, Zappe filled in at QB1, but he wasn’t impressive, as he has career stats of 2,053 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes, and 12 interceptions on a 63.2 percent completion rate in 14 games.

Jones has since been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was unable to duplicate his fine play as a rookie in 2021 when he was named to the Pro Bowl.

The Patriots suffered through a 4-13 finish last season, and longtime head coach Bill Belichick left and was replaced by Jerod Mayo, a former linebacker for the team.

They lack capable skill players on offense, but they’re hoping Maye will develop quickly and become their true franchise QB of the future.

If that happens, one should expect Zappe to be there providing support for Maye and staying ready in case he still needs to get out onto the field for at least a few snaps.
