When Tom Brady left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team was unsure where to turn at quarterback.
After his retirement, it seemed like there was going to be a QB competition between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask, an unproven young player the organization invested a second-round pick into.
However, as it got closer to the 2023 season, it became clear that Mayfield would become the starter, a position he held onto, never looking back.
Mayfield has developed a strong rapport with many of his teammates already, a testament to the culture the Buccaneers are now building.
This rapport was on full display in a recent interview with Sara Walsh of the NFL Network, as Mayfield spilled the beans about a minor car accident he recently had.
“Apparently I don’t know how to pull out of a parking lot, because, in June, I clipped his (Antoine Winfield Jr.’s) car, and just had to pay him back for it,” Mayfield said.
Didn’t expect this response from Baker when I asked him to help me talk about Antoine Winfield on the way to break… Mayfield told me he hit Winfield’s car in the parking lot in June. Both have the contracts to get that bumper fixed. #nflnetwork #gobucs pic.twitter.com/xNU548Vkgn

Mayfield was joking about the parking lot incident, which, by many accounts, is a good sign.
Had he not had a great relationship with Winfield, this might have been a different story.
Mayfield was a highly touted prospect heading into his time with the Cleveland Browns but wasn’t able to find his footing there.
He had a small stint with the Carolina Panthers, but again, didn’t seem to be in the right spot.
Hopefully, he can keep this momentum going with the Buccaneers, growing the team into a playoff contender once again.
