Not too long ago, people thought the New England Patriots had found Tom Brady’s successor.
But after a very disappointing second season, countless rumors about Mac Jones’ job security surfaced.
Add reports of him not seeing eye to eye with HC Bill Belichick to the mix, and you have yourself a big storyline to follow.
Notably, true to form, the veteran coach has done little to appease those rumors — and it doesn’t seem like he has any intention to do so.
When asked about whether the QB1 position was up for grabs, Belichick told the media that all 90 guys would be out there competing for a job, not just the quarterbacks, via Matt Dolloff.
Bill Belichick asked if the starting quarterback job is up for grabs: “Everybody’s out here competing. It’s all 90 guys.”
I want to see Bailey Zappe rep with the 1’s before believing in a real QB competition, but it’s certainly closer than your typical starter/backup dynamic. pic.twitter.com/EqvqfCkrD1

Dolloff adds that it doesn’t seem like Bailey Zappe has a legit chance to take Jones’ job now because he hasn’t worked out with the first team yet, but he claimed that it could be closer than it seems.
Belichick benched Jones in favor of Zappe last season after the backup had outperformed him while he was briefly out with an injury, fueling rumors and controversy.
Then again, he turned back to the Alabama product for the remainder of the season.
Feud or not, Belichick hasn’t had Jones’ back in public ever since; not even once.
And while the third-year pro was far from impressive in his second season in the league, perhaps this isn’t the kind of pressure or “positive competition” he needs at this point in his development, and a lot of that could fall on his coach.
