Sophomore seasons for NFL players that have breakout years in their rookie campaigns can prove incredibly tough, especially if the team makes changes that directly impact the players, as it did for Mac Jones of the New England Patriots.
Last season, Josh McDaniels chose to leave his job as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots to become the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
This move proved costly for the Patriots as their offense became a mess, with head coach Bill Belichick refusing to bring in another offensive coordinator to run the offense.
This ultimately led to a nightmare season for Jones, who went to find guidance on running the offense outside of the organization, which, according to Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran, rubbed Belichick the wrong way.
Tom E. Curran reveals that Coach Belichick was really pissed off at Mac Jones for going outside the building for advice on how to run the offense.
Curran also believes Brian Hoyer was released because he was against the system like Mac. pic.twitter.com/ZC3URuwdQw

As a result of Jones’ disappointing second season in New England and potentially causing a rift with Belichick, the future is uncertain for the one-time Pro Bowler.
There’s been a lot of talk, with rumors about the Patriots’ interest in making a blockbuster trade for superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.
Jackson hasn’t seen eye-to-eye with the Ravens on a new contract and has asked the team to trade him, with the Patriots being a genuine possibility.
With Belichick and owner Robert Kraft not getting any younger, the prospect of bringing in a talent like Jackson has to be compelling, especially if Jones has fallen out of favor with the team’s brass.
It seems that ever since the news surfaced about Jackson potentially going to the Patriots, more information on Jones has come out, which could mean a trade is on the horizon or possibly inevitable.
