During his 24 seasons with the New England Patriots, head coach Bill Belichick became a legend on the NFL level as he proved he was successful as the leader on the sideline rather than being part of Bill Parcells’ coaching staff.
Not only was Belichick able to break out of Parcells’ shadow and create his own legacy, which has far surpassed his mentor’s, but he’s arguably the greatest head coach of all time, with six Super Bowl titles to his credit as an NFL head coach.
Although Belichick will ultimately go down as one of the most successful NFL head coaches of all time, he did rub a lot of people the wrong way throughout his coaching career in New England, as he was known to be challenging to deal with and a head coach that was ruthless in terms of cutting players and making sure everyone did things his way, which became the “Patriot Way.”
Now that Belichick is unemployed, with the Patriots firing him after the 2023 NFL season, he has made a lot of appearances on talk shows, with his latest being on The Pat McAfee Show, where he admitted that cutting players is the hardest thing to do as a head coach.
“Cutting players is 100% the worst part of being a head coach,” Belichick said. “You’re letting players go that have given you everything that they got. My first year in the league at Baltimore, I was Bad News Billy.”

Even though Belichick has a reputation for being ruthless and parting ways with star players before they start to decline due to age and or on-field performance, the future Hall of Famer has shown his softer side after being humbled by being fired by the team he led to six titles.
In the meantime, Belichick will be seen more and more on shows during the 2024 NFL season, where he’ll likely continue to show this other side of his personality, which might bode well for him landing another job next year.
