Just last week, the New England Patriots made the unorthodox decision to stay with just one quarterback on the active roster, waiving both Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham.
Mac Jones was the undisputed QB1 for some hours until they claimed Matt Corral off waivers, but they also brought back the two quarterbacks they had waived to join their practice squad.
And while Zappe would help them get ready to face the more “traditional” quarterbacks, Cunningham’s dual-threat skill set is better suited for their matchups vs. mobile and scrambling quarterbacks.
So, now that they have the Philadelphia Eagles on deck for the season opener, a reporter asked about how good Cunnigham’s Jalen Hurts impersonation was, and HC Bill Belichick’s response was right on point.
According to Andrew Siciliano, the legendary coach stated that it was a major stretch to compare both players right now, as Hurts was coming off an MVP-caliber season.
Bill Belichick, asked to compare rookie QB/WR to Malik Cunningham to Jalen Hurts as the Patriots prepare for the Eagles:
“It’s a stretch to compare Malik Cunningham to Jalen Hurts now (sarcastically). You’re talking about second in the MVP voting…”

Truth be told, the question didn’t even make much sense.
Cunningham’s skill set can obviously come in handy to prepare some things and get ready for some sets, but his skill level is nowhere near Hurts’.
We’re talking about one of the best young quarterbacks in the league and one that’s fresh off signing one of the most lucrative deals in the history of professional sports.
Cunningham may not ever even be a backup in the NFL, and Hurts is looking forward to making his second trip to the Super Bowl despite being just 25 years old, so it definitely was a major stretch.
