The Pittsburgh Steelers are fed up with mediocre outcomes during the NFL season, and the stored franchise desperately tried to turn things around during the offseason by vastly upgrading the offense, especially at quarterback.
With Kenny Pickett turning out to be the wrong guy under center, the Steelers traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles and made two big moves to improve the position by signing veteran Russell Wilson, formerly of the Denver Broncos, and making a trade with the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields.
Initially, it seemed like Wilson’s job to lose simply due to his experience and what he’s accomplished in the NFL as a Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowler.
As for Fields, he wasn’t good enough in Chicago to convince the Bears to keep him over selecting Caleb Williams out of USC with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, so it was inevitable he was going to get traded this offseason but surprising that he’d land with the Steelers after they signed Wilson.
Now, things have gotten really interesting in Pittsburgh with there being a legitimate competition between these two quarterbacks, and former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said he thinks Mike Tomlin should go with the veteran over the younger player, as he said on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“I think with Russell Wilson, you start the season with Russell,” Cowher said, via Steelers Depot. “… I don’t want to start Justin Fields then feel like I have to make a change and I take him out. I would worry about, OK, all of a sudden, ‘I didn’t live up to the expectation.’”

At this point, Tomlin hasn’t named a starter for Week 1, when the Steelers visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 8, but the clock is ticking.
It seems as though each quarterback has made a case for the starting job, and it will be interesting to see what Tomlin ends up doing and the impact it will have on the offense moving forward.
