When Brandon Staley took over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, it seemed like an overwhelmingly positive hire for the team.
Staley was a young, new coach, who was largely given this opportunity because he was on Sean McVay’s staff.
McVay is widely viewed as one of the NFL’s best coaches and has helped several former staffers get head coaching jobs elsewhere.
While Staley’s arrival might have been highly regarded, things have taken a turn for the worse.
The Chargers haven’t taken the next step as a team, resulting in frustrations from fans and analysts alike.
Despite this frustration and a record of 4-5. Staley doesn’t want to make any major changes.
According to reporter Alex Insdorf, Staley recently declared that he does not want to give up defensive play-calling.
Brandon Staley says giving up defensive play calling is not under consideration.

If this remains the case moving forward, Staley’s seat could get a little warmer.
One of Staley’s unique attributes as a coach is playing the numbers.
He is an analytically-driven coach, which often helps him make key decisions throughout a game.
While this can be a positive aspect of his coaching at times, when it doesn’t work out, Staley gets heavily criticized.
He tends to go for it on fourth down more than other coaches, which hasn’t always yielded the best results.
By going for it rather than kicking a field goal and guaranteeing points, the Chargers have lost a few close games.
If Staley remains adamant in this stance, along with the defensive play-calling, the Chargers will likely find themselves on the couch during the playoffs rather than participating.
