The New York Yankees are at risk of finishing their first season with a losing record in 31 years.

After finally breaking a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals, they are 61-65 in 2023.

They are last in the AL East and 9.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot, so the postseason is now a pipe dream.

Between injuries, suspensions, unexpected slumps, dugout arguments, shocking behavior, and poor roster construction and in-game management, the season has been a disaster for them.

That’s not us saying that: those are actually the words of GM Brian Cashman.

“Brian Cashman is here speaking to reporters and he just called this season a disaster, something nobody would’ve predicted. ‘We’re going to evaluate it all. Unfortunately we’re going to have some time to do that,’” Yankees insider Max Goodman tweeted.

The evaluation process has actually started already, and has yielded an important conclusion: the Yankees need to start thinking about 2024 and playing some young prospects to see what they have in them.

The process started with calling up Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira, as the two were having remarkable seasons in Triple-A.

As a result, uber-prospect Jasson Dominguez was bumped to Triple-A, deservedly so.

The prospects are an important part of the Yankees’ future, and the organization needed to see if some of them can claim a role on the 2024 team.

Pereira and Peraza carry that kind of potential.

As for Cashman, while he has had some bad luck regarding the health of the players he has acquired in recent seasons, it’s also important to note that the Yankees have looked old and unathletic most of the year.

That should be on him.

Hopefully for Yankees fans, the prospect promotions bring some fresh blood into a dormant franchise.
