The New York Knicks fumbled a chance to close out their first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers yesterday, losing Game 5 in overtime, 112-106, after having a 6-point lead with 28 seconds left.

It was an ironic collapse that flipped the script from Game 2 when Philly suffered a similar defeat, and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst highlighted the biggest mistakes that led to the loss.

Windhorst today highlighted the three big mistakes the Knicks made, with one being Mitchell Robinson’s foul of Tyrese Maxey with 26 seconds left that resulted in a 4-point play, Josh Hart’s ensuing missed free throw with 15 seconds left, and the final mistake being the decision not to foul Maxey on the floor before he hit the 35-footer to send the game to overtime.

The 76ers became the first team in the last 25 postseasons to overcome a 6-point deficit in the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter.

Windhorst mentioned that every huge playoff comeback always features a missed free throw, which somehow seems to be true every time.

Maxey finished with 46 points and nine assists to make up for Joel Embiid’s lackluster 7-19 shooting performance with a ghastly nine turnovers, though he did have 16 rebounds, 10 assists, and four blocks.

The Sixers now head home for Game 6 with a chance to force a Game 7 back in New York.

We now have a trio of Game 6s on the slate after the Milwaukee Bucks avoided elimination at the hands of the Indiana Pacers, and the first round in the East is turning out to be more dramatic than many expected.
