The NBA world was shocked on Thursday morning when it was revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers are targeting UConn head coach Dan Hurley to replace Darvin Ham.

Many were surprised by this news because Hurley wasn’t thought of as a potential candidate, but apparently, the Lakers have had their eyes on him for some time.

On “Get Up,” Brian Windhorst said that the hiring of Hurley would be a “high-risk, high-reward” choice that could help the team in the short and long term.

He also made it clear that LeBron James would be content with this hiring, which might give the Lakers the go-ahead they need to make a formal offer.

The risk with Hurley comes from the fact that he doesn’t have any head coaching experience in the NBA.

With that being said, back-to-back NCAA championships can’t be ignored, and he has the respect of many players, both in college and the league.

He has the perfect sort of skill set that would lay the groundwork for years to come, especially because he is great at molding young players into stars.

He could be the sort of coach who could lead the next generation of Lakers stars after James retires.

That is the high-reward part of this hiring: it could start the next chapter of the Lakers’ history.

Based on the reporting from Windhorst and others, the Lakers really want Hurley so this situation could escalate quickly.

Does Hurley guarantee immediate success for the Lakers or is he someone who won’t help the team achieve postseason greatness for a few years?

There is a lot to consider with this selection but the Lakers sound committed to moving forward.
