Last summer, all the buzz in the NBA surrounded the arrival of French superstar Victor Wembanyama as he was finally eligible to enter the NBA Draft and begin his playing career in the United States.

Ultimately, the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery, giving Gregg Popovich and company the opportunity to draft the then-19-year-old with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The Spurs didn’t hesitate to bring in Wembanyama with the top pick in the draft, even though the team hasn’t been able to completely turn things around with arguably the most promising young player in the league on the roster.

Despite Wembanyama’s arrival, the Spurs remain one of the worst teams in the league, with San Antonio currently sporting a record of 12-48, which is the worst in the Western Conference.

However, Wembanyama has been living up to expectations as a dominant player on both ends of the basketball floor this season and is the clear favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year, which has prompted ESPN’s Brian Windhorst to say that the rookie phenom isn’t getting enough credit or attention in his first season, via NBA on ESPN.

“People aren’t giving Wembanyama enough credit, enough attention,” Windhorst said.

Even though Wembanyama might not be getting the respect and recognition he deserves right now, that will change in the near future once the Spurs start winning games and become a force to be reckoned with in the West once again.

The main issue right now is that Wembanyama has a serious lack of talent around him, which needs to change if San Antonio truly wants to get back into playoff contention.
