After Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down for the San Francisco 49ers last year, head coach Kyle Shanahan had to turn to rookie quarterback Brock Purdy to get the job done in a season the team was considered to be a legitimate title contender.
Even though Purdy was given an incredibly tall task with the odds against him after he was taken with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant,” the former Iowa State star was able to pull it off until he was injured in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite some considering Purdy’s rise to stardom in San Francisco a fluke and something he couldn’t repeat in 2023, he was able to defy the odds once again and lead the team to the Super Bowl while being a legitimate candidate for NFL MVP.
Throughout this process, Purdy and Shanahan have become close, as the head coach has the utmost faith in him, which prompted a question from the media about their relationship, via 95.7 The Game.
“Our relationship, I feel like, has gotten stronger. And we’ve been real about a lot of things with each other. You need to be real. You need to be authentic if you’re trying to win. You go through the highs and lows together,” Purdy said of his relationship with Shanahan.

As Purdy has learned to be a leader at the NFL level, there’s no question he and Shanahan had their fair share of growing pains, but in the end, they might be Super Bowl champions.
Heading into Sunday’s game at Allegiant Stadium, the 49ers are the slight favorites against the Kansas City Chiefs.
