When the San Francisco 49ers drafted Brock Purdy, they weren’t expecting him into the player he’s been over the past two seasons.
After all, he was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, a draft position that hasn’t produced superstar talents in the past.
While he has only led the 49ers for two years, Purdy is starting to turn heads as a young QB, and a recent stat proves how well he has played to this point.
According to The 33rd Team on Twitter, Purdy led the league in 2023 when it came to a percentage of plays going over 20 yards.
Per The 33rd Team’s analytics, Purdy had plays for 20+ yards 14.1% of the time.
For context, this was over three percentage points higher than the player in second place, C.J. Stroud, who had 11.5% of his plays go for over 20 yards.

This is an indication that Purdy is not only performing ahead of where many thought he would but that he is among the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league.
The 49ers do have several elite skill-position players at their disposal, yes, but Purdy still needs to find them with his passes, which he has seemingly done at an elite rate.
Purdy is still on his rookie deal, meaning that the 49ers have an upper-echelon quarterback on a budget, for at least one more year.
Some analysts and fans believe this gives them a great edge over the competition this season, so it will be interesting to see if they’ll be able to get back to the Super Bowl and do what they were unable to do last year.
