The San Francisco 49ers are more than confident about their quarterback situation.
First, they planned for Jimmy Garoppolo to be their guy, and while the early results were promising, he was never the same player after suffering a season-ending injury.
Then, they gave up a lot to get Trey Lance, but his slow development and injury-proneness also stood in the way.
Notably, they wound up holding onto the guy who may not even have had any business being there in the first place: Mr. Irrelevant.
To this day, some still aren’t high on Brock Purdy.
Nonetheless, numbers back up his case.
As a matter of fact, as pointed out by Warren Sharp on Twitter, he actually led all players in completion percentage in passes of 20+ yards last season, completing 55% of his passes.

That’s 5% more than Tua Tagovailoa, who came in second, and significantly more than Mac Jones and his 8%, which ranked dead-last in the league.
Of course, some might continue to nitpick and credit that to Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, or even Christian McCaffrey, but that’s not the case.
Purdy is just walking his first steps in the league, but he’s proven that he’s a winner, even putting the team on his shoulders when things have gotten complicated in the Bay area, particularly in the playoffs.
For years, people raved about how Tom Brady beat the odds as a sixth-round pick, and rightfully so, so perhaps we should have the same energy about the last pick in the NFL Draft becoming a legitimate starter on a Super Bowl-caliber team.
