The Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off their season vs. the San Francisco 49ers.

This will be the — official — beginning of the Brock Purdy era for the Bay Area team, and Steelers veteran Patrick Peterson made sure to put him on notice right away.

In the latest edition of his “All Things Covered” podcast, the former Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowler tipped his hat off to Kyle Shanahan and his offense.

However, he also said that there were some telling signs about the plays they were set to run, stating that he would pick Purdy off in the matchup.

When asked about that, the Iowa State product shook off the concerns, claiming that he wasn’t so sure about that, but also praising Peterson and claiming that he grew up watching him and knowing his competitive nature:

“Yeah, I don’t really know what to say about that,” Purdy said, via 49ers on NBCS. “I mean, he’s a good player. Patrick Peterson’s a great player. I grew up watching him and everything. I was obviously from Arizona. He played for the Cardinals and stuff. So yeah, it’s the competitive nature of football. So, we’ll see.”

“We’ll see.”

The 33-year-old joined the Steelers this offseason, and he’s always been a bit of a ballhawk.

He’s piled up 34 interceptions throughout the course of his career, including five last season when he was still with the Minnesota Vikings.

As for Purdy, he’s been far from flawless when it comes to taking care of the football, as he’s thrown four interceptions in his career (two as a starter and two coming off the bench).

Purdy drew very positive reviews during training camp, and Shanahan made it loud and clear that it was his job to lose, even sending away Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys.

He’ll be put to the test right away against an elite defense like Pittsburgh’s, and it’ll be interesting to see who gets the last laugh in this duel.
