The Denver Broncos were rumored to be in the mix to trade up to get a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft.
They weren’t as aggressive as most people thought, and they claimed that it was all a diversion because they were always high on Bo Nix.
Nix came with plenty of experience at the collegiate level and wouldn’t face a lot of competition for the QB1 spot.
That’s why it was kind of surprising to see that he’s not listed at the top of their depth chart.
As pointed out by Adam Schefter, HC Sean Payton has designated Jarrett Stidham as QB1 ahead of their first preseason game, with Zach Wilson as his backup, and Nix as the third-stringer.
Broncos are listing Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback on the first depth chart of the season. Rookie first-round pick Bo Nix is listed as third string.

Nix drew positive reviews in training camp, and so did Wilson, so this decision is a bit of a shocker.
Then again, that doesn’t necessarily mean this is set in stone, and Stidham will most definitely have a short leash even if he enters the season as a starter.
The Broncos aren’t expected to be much of a powerhouse next season, and that allows young quarterbacks to play through their mistakes and develop.
Still, if they don’t feel like he’s ready to take the field, they might consider that being patient and playing it slowly with him would be better for his development.
This will be a story to keep an eye on, and while the fans might feel disappointed right now, it could all be for the greater good.
