The New England Patriots may have struck gold with Drake Maye.

There’s a lot to like when it comes to his intangibles.

And while the tape may not always show it, his upside is sky-high.

However, it was also more than evident that he wasn’t all that ready to make it to the league.

That’s why it wasn’t a surprise to see Patriots HC Jerod Mayo announce that they would go with Jacoby Brissett to start the year.

Nevertheless, CJ Stroud doesn’t agree with him.

When asked who he thought was the most NFL-ready rookie quarterback, he gave Maye the nod (via Savage Sports).

He thinks he throws guys open and doesn’t scramble just for the sake of it.

Stroud praised him for not moving around that much or taking unnecessary risks.

Maye has the physical tools to be one of the best players in the game.

He’s built like Josh Allen and has shown similar arm strength and willingness to scramble if it comes down to that.

Still, as promising as he is, the Patriots know they cannot afford to make the same mistake they made with Mac Jones.

They’re going to take their time with him and won’t rush him into the fire, knowing that most rookie quarterbacks must go through a learning curve before being ready to take the field.

And if that means that he won’t be out there for the start of his NFL career, then so be it.

He’s still young, and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to make up for that ‘lost’ time.
