The 2023 NFL MVP race has been something of a whirlwind.

As the schedule gets into the back half of the season, one or two frontrunners typically establish themselves.

The picture is getting a bit clearer, as many fans and analysts believe that Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott are currently the top two options.

However, not everyone is sold on Purdy as an MVP-caliber player.

In a recent podcast appearance, Cam Newton expressed his feelings about him.

He said that the San Francisco 49ers are “not winning because of him,” adding, “he’s managing the game.”

Being touted as a ‘game manager’ is often seen as an insult across the NFL.

It is viewed as downplaying the effect of a player on a team, that they are just a product of their system.

The 49ers are routinely applauded for how their organization is run and how impactful Kyle Shanahan is as a coach.

This has given people like Newton an opinion, indicating that players are just a product of their situation rather than having sheer skill.

Whether it is his system or not, Purdy still finds himself entrenched in the heart of MVP voting.

Most sportsbooks have him as the second favorite to win the award, right behind Prescott.

Purdy is among the league leaders in many statistical categories, including passing yards, touchdowns, and has thrown limited interceptions.

He has risen above his draft capital of a seventh-rounder, proving his doubters wrong.

If he wins the MVP this year, much of the noise will likely be put to bed.
