The Pittsburgh Steelers went from having three backup quarterbacks to two potential starters.
Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Mason Rudolph weren’t starting-caliber players, and they now have Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
Both players will look to prove their worth and will have a huge chip on their shoulders.
Nonetheless, Wilson has an edge over Fields right now, and he’s been penciled in as their QB1 already.
That’s why former NFL MVP Cam Newton believes Fields might not even be in Pittsburgh beyond this season.
Talking on his 4th and 1 podcast, the Carolina Panthers star argued that if Wilson plays well for the Steelers and leads them to the playoffs, then Fields might need to be traded as a part of a package.
That’s the harsh reality, but it might actually be a fact.
Fields was always considered an elite prospect and was a first-round pick, but his trade value plummeted this offseason.
It only took the Steelers a sixth-round pick that could end up being a fourth-round pick to get the young quarterback, so they might have to give up something more valuable to get rid of him and his potential contract extension if they like what Wilson gives them.
Of course, one could argue that the Steelers should give Fields the nod because of his youth and upside, but they want to win now, and Wilson gives them a better chance to do so at this particular point in their careers.
