The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline this year.

On Friday, they got that process started when they dealt left-hander Genesis Cabrera to the Toronto Blue Jays.

In exchange, they acquired catching prospect Sammy Hernandez.

St. Louis came into Friday’s game with a 44-53 record, 10 games out of first place, and with little hope of a turnaround, despite a six-game winning streak.

On Twitter, a Cardinals analyst hyped up the team’s new catching prospect by posting a video of him picking off a runner at first base, similarly to how franchise legend Yadier Molina used to.

The Cardinals already have a ton of catching depth in their system, which includes Ivan Herrera, Tres Berrera, and Pedro Pages.

Hernandez adds to that depth.

This is certainly something to look forward to for the Cardinals.

Cabrera was having a difficult season, but now has a chance for a fresh start with a contender.

Meanwhile, Hernandez has a solid arm behind the plate and is somebody that the Cardinals may have a chance to take a look at in spring training next year.

On this play, Hernandez certainly thought quickly and was able to nab the runner at first base, just like a franchise legend in Molina.

No catcher will ever match Molina, but a solid arm behind the plate as a good thing for a catcher, and the Cardinals now have yet another catcher with a strong arm behind the plate.

More moves similar to this may take place for the Cards in the coming weeks.
