The St. Louis Cardinals have suddenly started playing much better baseball.

They are 8-2 in their past 10 games and have won five consecutive contests.

The team also found its way out of the cellar in the NL Central division.

However, this doesn’t change much.

The team comes into Thursday’s matchup with the Chicago Cubs trailing the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by 10 games and trailing in the NL Wild Card race by 9.5 games.

The Cardinals are also still 10 games below the .500 mark.

On Twitter, a Cardinals fan pointed out that even with their current hot streak, things aren’t looking too good as far as reaching the postseason goes, with their playoff odds sitting at 10.5 percent, per FanGraphs.

If anything, this should be more of a positive sign for 2024.

The Cardinals have already essentially buried themselves in the standings thanks to dreadful first half, their worst since 1986.

And even with them playing better, things still aren’t looking good in the standings, making it very likely that the team will finish below .500 for the first time since 2007.

Still, as far as 2024 goes, it’s a sign that the core the team has in place is good enough to compete for a division title next year.

John Mozeliak, the team’s president of baseball operations, has already confirmed that the Cardinals are planning on being sellers at the trade deadline, essentially punting on the rest of the 2023 season.

Crazier things have happened, but the Cardinals have already dug themselves a deep enough hole that there likely is no way to save the season.
