The St. Louis Cardinals were forced to place veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain.

In response, the Cardinals recalled pitchers Dakota Hudson and Zack Thompson from Triple-A Memphis.

Because of Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees, St. Louis was forced to improvise with their pitching staff for Wednesday’s game against the Miami Marlins.

However, the team now has their pitching plan set for Wednesday night’s matchup.

On Twitter, Katie Woo of The Athletic revealed that the Cardinals will start Matthew Liberatore on short rest for the third game of their series with Miami.

ICYMI it on @101espn:

– Matthew Liberatore starts today
– No designated roles for Dakota Hudson/Zack Thompson, they can be used as either relievers or starters depending on need
– Wainwright hoping to find finish on pitches, has pitched through this before with better results.

Woo also noted that there are no defined roles yet for Hudson and Thompson.

However, both could be available out of the bullpen in the coming days, with one of them ultimately filling Wainwright’s spot in the rotation until a trade is made.

Woo noted that both pitchers will be used depending on what the Cardinals need in the coming days.

Wainwright was scheduled to pitch again on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.

That obviously will not happen now due to the injury, but in addition to Hudson and Thompson, the Cardinals have a third option, that being left-hander Steven Matz, who has pitched brilliantly out of the bullpen since being removed from the rotation.

St. Louis comes into Wednesday’s game with Miami 11.5 games back in the NL Central and 10.5 back in the Wild Card race with a record of 35-50 on the year.

Liberatore will start against Marlins right-hander Bryan Hoeing.
