Monday night was more than likely a tough one for fans of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team is 38-52 and just finished its worst first half since 1986.

To add salt to the wound, two current MLB stars that were once in the Cardinals organization squared off in the Home Run Derby.

Randy Arozarena faced off against Adolis Garcia in the first round.

Both sluggers were once outfielders in the Cards system, but were both ultimately traded.

On Twitter, Cardinals insider Katie Woo revealed that she had turned on the derby just in time to see the two of them embrace and hear the ESPN broadcast say: “This is really a St. Louis Cardinals nightmare-scenario.”

Indeed, it is a nightmare scenario for the Cardinals and their fans.

Arozarena was shipped off to the Tampa Bay Rays after the 2019 season in exchange for left-hander Matthew Liberatore.

Arozarena quickly turned himself into a postseason hero and a perennial All-Star with the Rays, while Liberatore owns a career ERA of 6.35.

Garcia has become a fixture in the lineup for the Texas Rangers.

The Cardinals traded him to Texas in an attempt to clear up the outfield logjam that has been plaguing them for years.

All they got in exchange was cash.

If anything, Cardinals fans’ frustration with President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak only intensified on Monday as they remembered what could have been if these trades were not made.

Arozarena ultimately reached the derby finals before losing to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but that did little to ease the pain of fans in St. Louis.
