2023 has been nothing short of a disaster for the St. Louis Cardinals.

This is a team that was expected to easily win the NL Central.

However, they find themselves in the basement of the division after going 38-52 in the first half.

That’s their worst mark in the first half since 1986.

Pitching was not addressed over the winter and has collapsed.

At the same time, the team and its fans are constantly reminded of the trades that sent Randy Arozarena to the Tampa Bay Rays and Adolis Garcia to the Texas Rangers.

Neither deal has worked out for St. Louis.

The two matched up against each other in the Home Run Derby last night.

On Twitter, Cardinals writer Derrick Goold summed up how these trades have not worked out for the Cardinals and how they ultimately hurt the team.

Met as Cardinals.
Roommates as Cardinals.
Friends as Cardinals.
Stars as not Cardinals. https://t.co/nVVgFfHkpi

Arozarena and Garcia have been friends since their time in the Cardinals organization.

They were even roommates at one time.

However, both stars are with other organizations and are thriving with their new teams, which has become a theme for the Cardinals in recent years.

The same can be said for Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara, who went back to the Miami Marlins in the Marcell Ozuna trade.

Gallen, now with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is starting the All-Star Game for the National League side.

Garcia and Arozarena are both in the starting lineup for the American League.

On the broadcast for the Home Run Derby, Karl Ravech even referred to the matchup between Garcia and Arozarena as a “nightmare scenario” for Cardinals fans.
