The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of baseball’s biggest disappointments to start the 2023 season.
Despite being picked by many to scamper off with their 14th NL Central title, the Cards now find themselves at the bottom of the pack, 8.5 games out of first place.
On Friday, things didn’t get any better as they failed to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But the series of unfortunate events began slightly before the first pitch, as Tyler O’Neill was scratched due to a back issue.
Meanwhile, Jordan Walker and Juan Yepez, both of whom are at Triple-A Memphis hit home runs on Friday.
On Twitter, Cardinals writer Ben Frederickson took note of this frustrating fact.
There is something oh so #STLCards 2023 about just-demoted Jordan Walker homering in Memphis the same night Tyler O’Neill is scratched with back tightness. Gotta keep the outfielders comfortable, though. Robes, slippers and perfectly packaged playing time for all. https://t.co/QJzmgdZPFp

Walker was recently sent down to Triple-A despite having posted a .274 average to start the season.
He also began his career with a 12-game hitting streak.
But it also somewhat harkens back to the fact that several players the Cardinals have traded have become stars.
Players such as Randy Arozarena, Zac Gallen, Sandy Alcantara, and Adolis Garcia come to mind.
While this is a slightly different situation, Walker appears to be heating up after having been sent down.
The Cardinals offense could certainly use a bit of a spark, and having Walker in the lineup might give them that spark.
However, he was demoted, and on the same night that O’Neill was scratched, he homered in Triple-A, all while the Cards continued to miss key opportunities with runners on base.
The team now owns an unfortunate record of 10-17.
