The pitching staff of the St. Louis Cardinals has been a trainwreck this season.
Aside from re-signing Adam Wainwright, a move which has come back to haunt them, St. Louis did not add any additional pitching.
As such, they find themselves at the bottom of the NL Central with a record of 36-51.
With the trade deadline approaching, it will be interesting to see what the Cardinals do to address their pitching.
More than likely, Jordan Montgomery and Jack Flaherty will both be traded.
On a St. Louis sports show, John Denton, who covers the Cardinals for MLB.com, discussed a potential overhaul of the pitching staff and gave a grim prediction.
Can the Cardinals fix their pitching in just one offseason? #STLCards insider @JohnDenton555 on #BKandFerrario.

Denton commented that it is likely going to take a few years for the team to completely overhaul its staff because of the current mess they find themselves in.
Denton also noted that there isn’t a lot of help on the way from the minor leagues, as prospects such as Tink Hence are still several years away.
The Cardinals are a team that is known for drafting and developing talent, and Denton notes that this will have to change in order to get the pitching they need.
If the Cardinals need pitching in the offseason, they’ll need to spend big in order to get it.
If that comes via trade, they’ll need to part with some valuable young talent, including potentially trading Lars Nootbaar or even Brendan Donovan.
Frontline starting pitching is what they’ll need, and Denton pointed out that a philosophy change may be in order if they intend to upgrade their rotation and pitching staff.
