After taking a 5-0 lead against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night, the St. Louis Cardinals once again let it slip away.
Jordan Montgomery exited the game early with a hamstring issue and the bullpen collapsed yet again.
By the end of the night, St. Louis had fallen by a final score of 8-7 and dropped back to 16 games below the .500 mark.
To make matters worse, it marked the third time in the last week that they had scored seven or more runs but still ended up losing.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweeted this grim fact, showing just how far the Cardinals have fallen.
In their past seven games, #stlcards have scored at least seven runs four times.

St. Louis’ offense has been the lone bright spot of the season.
However, the fact that they are 1-3 in their most recent games when scoring seven or more runs shows just how depleted the pitching staff is.
The bullpen has now already blown 20 saves after having blown just 16 back in 2022.
Things have only gotten worse for the Cardinals as the season continues to drag on.
The starting rotation took another major hit with Montgomery’s early exit, which put the bullpen in a bad position.
In just 3.2 innings, the bullpen surrendered seven runs.
St. Louis has relied heavily on its offense, which again has been a bright spot.
However, their stacked lineup has been unable to bail them out this year, especially when the pitching has struggled.
Ultimately, it’s a testament to the fragility of the pitching staff and the lack of pitching depth within the organization at the moment.
