The trade deadline is officially complete.

Unlike years prior, the St. Louis Cardinals were forced to approach the deadline as sellers.

The team sold off assets such as Jack Flaherty, Jordan Montgomery, Paul DeJong, Chris Stratton, and Jordan Hicks.

In exchange, they received several young pitching prospects to bolster their farm system.

Still, when the regular season ends, the Cardinals will shift their focus to the offseason, when they’ll have to address three openings in the starting rotation.

Flaherty and Montgomery are both gone and Adam Wainwright is set to retire at season’s end.

On Twitter, Katie Woo, who covers the Cardinals for The Athletic, gave fans an important reminder, that not all of the work was going to be done at the trade deadline.

The #STLCards were never going to address all of their needs at the deadline. Mozeliak has said as much.

They saw an opportunity at the deadline to sell off walk-year players while simultaneously acquiring young pitching depth. They know plenty of work remains over the offseason https://t.co/Db33M0m2zg

The Cardinals were looking for controllable young starting pitchers that were Major League ready.

Unfortunately, they were not able to accomplish this, and in turn did not clear up their outfield logjam.

Still, they accomplished quite a bit at this year’s deadline, stacking up the farm system and improving their minor league pitching depth.

The Cardinals were never going to complete the overhaul of the pitching staff at the deadline, and while they’ll have three open rotation spots to fill over the winter, the front office will have some money to spend.

Not only that, but they could trade from their new crop of young prospects and outfield depth to address at least one of the rotation holes, which would give them more financial flexibility.
