On Wednesday, 41-year-old right-hander Adam Wainwright made his first rehab start since landing on the injured list to start the 2023 season.
The St. Louis Cardinals assigned the veteran righty to Double-A Springfield.
Wainwright was scheduled to throw roughly 60 pitches on Wednesday, and will be scheduled to throw up to 75 pitches in his next rehab start.
The two-time World Series champion was mostly effective, as he pitched three innings, struck out three batters, allowed four hits, and did not walk a batter.
His one mistake came in the second inning when he allowed a two-run home run.
On Twitter, Katie Woo of The Athletic provided fans with an update on the three-time All-Star’s rehab start.
Adam Wainwright was scheduled for 60 pitches in his first rehab start today. He threw 59 (40 for strikes) over three innings. Allowed four hits, didn’t walk a batter, struck out three. His lone mistake was a two-run HR in the second.
He’ll have one more outing at 75 pitches.

For most of the 2022 season, Wainwright was one of St. Louis’ most dependable starters.
However, after he was hit in the knee with a come-backer, he encountered an issue with his stride which caused a mechanical flaw.
In all but one start in September, he allowed four or more runs and was ultimately skipped over in the postseason.
Wainwright went 11-12 and posted an ERA of 3.71 in 32 starts.
He signed a one-year deal over the winter to remain in St. Louis for one final season.
Wainwright closed out the NLCS and World Series in 2006 and was around for the team’s run to the title in 2011, despite missing the season due to Tommy John surgery.
The veteran right-hander is the last remaining holdover from each of the Cardinals’ most recent championship runs and will retire at the end of the 2023 season.
