The month of April has come and gone.

But with one month behind us already in the 2023 season, there are certain teams who have grossly underperformed.

The most obvious example is the St. Louis Cardinals, who were picked by most to win the NL Central out of spring training.

However, the season hasn’t gone according to plan.

Certain areas of the roster have been exposed as weak points, and though it’s still early in the season, that argument can’t be made for much longer.

On Tuesday, Katie Woo, who covers the Cardinals for The Athletic, sounded off on the team’s struggles and what it will take for them to turn things around.

What is the #STLCards clubhouse thinking after the franchise’s worst start to a season in 50 years? @katiejwoo joined #BKandFerrario to discuss the team’s struggles, and what the path forward looks like.

Woo notes that the common sentiment within the Cardinals clubhouse is that this is not their true identity and that they have the talent to turn their season around and get back into contention.

However, with one month gone, Woo also said that it’s fair to question whether this is in fact their true identity.

She noted that the Cardinals know the talent is on the roster, but that the question now is whether they can gel as a unit.

Certain players such as Miles Mikolas and Nolan Arenado are off to uncharacteristically bad starts this season.

Woo went on to talk about how the Cardinals are already feeling the pressure to get things going.

They own a 10-19 record, which is second-worst in the National League.

The team is also already 10 games back of first place, a spot currently held by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Finally, Woo closed her statement by repeating the common saying, that you can’t win a division in April, but you can certainly lose one.
