Drama ensued in Thursday night’s series opener between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs after Willson Contreras was hit in the head with Ian Happ’s backswing and was forced to exit the game.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas responded by plunking Happ.

However, instead of warning both benches, the umpiring crew chose to eject Mikolas.

This spelled trouble for St. Louis, as the Cubs touched Dakota Hudson for five runs over 4.1 innings.

Manager Oliver Marmol was also tossed from the game.

On Twitter, Bally Sports Midwest, the TV home of the Cardinals, posted a video of the moment Mikolas hit Happ and was subsequently ejected from the game.

This was certainly a strange sequence of events.

In a matter of minutes, the Cardinals lost their catcher, starting pitcher, and manager.

It was certainly an interesting moment during the series opener.

The Cubs did not seem to take any issue with Happ being hit by Mikolas’ pitch.

Happ also seemed unfazed by what took place following Contreras’ exit.

He and Contreras shared a hug as the veteran catcher walked off the field.

But after the umpires converged for a brief moment, the decision was made to eject Mikolas.

The Cardinals were then forced to throw a bullpen game, which resulted in a 10-3 loss that dropped them back to 12 games below the .500 mark.

The Cubs on the other hand, reached the .500 mark for the first time since May and won their sixth consecutive game, coming to within 5.5 games of first place in the NL Central.
