With minutes to spare before the trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals shipped off their final piece, trading right-hander Jack Flaherty to the Baltimore Orioles.

The sell-off was officially complete, and the Cardinals were left with several young prospects and a much stronger farm system.

However, saying goodbye is never easy for players, fans, coaches, or even media members.

Jim Hayes, the Cardinals sideline reporter, got a chance to know Flaherty quite well during the latter’s time in St. Louis.

Flaherty came up in 2017 and has been a member of the St. Louis rotation ever since.

On Twitter, Hayes wished the departed right-hander well in Baltimore.

Jack Flaherty is an outstanding young man and a tremendously talented pitcher. You may have heard otherwise, but he was great to deal with from a media standpoint. I wish him the best. #STLCards

Hayes praised Flaherty for being “an outstanding young man” and a very talented pitcher.

He acknowledged that often times, fans’ perception of Flaherty was skewed.

However, Hayes confirmed that it was truly a pleasure to get to know the young right-hander and that he was a delight to the media.

Flaherty’s best stretch with the Cardinals came in the second half of the 2019 season, when he helped guide the Cardinals to their 11th NL Central title.

He also won the clinching Game 5 of the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves.

Injuries began to take their toll on the promising young right-hander in 2021, and he ultimately missed most of the 2022 season as a result.

But Flaherty had plenty of great moments during his time in a Cardinals uniform.

He was a reliable rotation arm for several years and pitched some very good games while with the Cardinals.

Now, he’ll join the Orioles, who have the best record in the American League.
