With the 2023 season having gone off the rails, the St. Louis Cardinals head into a weekend series against the Chicago White Sox in hopes of gaining a little traction before the All-Star break.

As they head to Chicago for the weekend, they do so with a new face in the dugout.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, utility infielder Jose Fermin is set to join the team for the weekend.

Fermin was injured in spring training but has since returned and is hitting well at Triple-A Memphis.

Goold announced the news on Twitter.

Late night news: INF Jose Fermin expected to join #stlcards in Chicago, according to source.

Had spring bid interrupted by a leg injury — 7 games, 1 HR into healthy return to Class AAA. Related roster move TBD. I’m packing for Seattle. @LWorthySports has coverage from Chicago.

Fermin was acquired by the Cardinals from the Cleveland Guardians at the onset of the offseason to strengthen their middle infield depth.

Recently, Tommy Edman has been out of the starting lineup nursing a sore wrist, though he has entered games late as a defensive replacement.

The Cardinals recently had Luken Baker up from Triple-A for their series against the Miami Marlins.

With the Memphis Redbirds, Fermin had hit a home run seven games into his return.

The Cardinals will be getting a utilityman who can play multiple positions around the infield and could possibly serve as a defensive replacement late in games.

After losing three out of four against the Marlins, the Cardinals owns a record of 36-51 and sit in dead last in the NL Central.

However, they’ll add a fresh face to the mix for their final series of the first half.

St. Louis is 12.5 games back of first place in the NL Central.
