The St. Louis Cardinals got off to a very bad start this season and were 14 games below the .500 mark by the end of the first half.

However, they have since won eight of their last 10, including a five-game winning streak which has propelled them to 10 games below the .500 mark.

Recently, they swept the Miami Marlins and moved out of last place in the NL Central.

While it is very likely that St. Louis will sell at the trade deadline, the team has been encouraged by their recent results.

Nolan Gorman, who hit a three-run homer on Wednesday in the series finale, says that this is what the team was expecting before the season started.

John Denton of MLB.com tweeted his response.

Suddenly surging #STLCards lefty slugger Nolan Gorman to MLB’s @benweinrib : “This is what we expected from the start. Obviously it didn’t go that way, but it’s good to see it come together.”https://t.co/JJtpjzwnYH

Gorman acknowledged that the season has not gone well for the Cardinals.

However, he did say that he was glad to see the team playing much better baseball as of late, which is what the team was anticipating coming out of spring training.

The Cardinals had a brief hot stretch after starting the season 10-24.

They won four consecutive series against the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Dodgers to come to within five games of first place.

They went on another tailspin after that however and fell to 27-43.

Since then, they are 16-10 and have moved out of last place in the NL Central.

Unfortunately, they are still quite far out of contention in both the Wild Card race and the division, making a comeback unlikely.

But Gorman and the Cardinals are at least encouraged by their current stretch of play.
