While fans of the St. Louis Cardinals will receive no sympathy from fans of other teams, it is easy to understand their current frustration as the team languishes in last place in the NL Central.
To make matters worse, several players that they previously traded are flourishing with other teams.
Recent examples include Randy Arozarena, Zac Gallen, Adolis Garcia, and Sandy Alcantara.
This year, the Cardinals are feeling the effects of those trades.
Three of the four aforementioned players were All-Stars this year.
On the MLB podcast “Foul Territory,” Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed how the Cardinals are feeling the effects of previous trades.

Goold discussed the fact that the All-Star starting lineups had three of those four players, while none are still with the Cardinals.
Alcantara won a Cy Young last year and Gallen is on track to potentially win this year.
Goold described it as “lemon in the paper-cut.”
He also noted that like the fans, the Cardinals themselves are wondering what could have been had they held onto some of these pieces, as well as if they had pushed harder to sign outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who is now with the Chicago White Sox.
These trades were also relatively recent.
The trade involving Gallen and Alcantara took place in 2017, while the Arozarena and Garcia trades took place in 2020.
St. Louis is now feeling the effects of the misses by the front office in recent years, and it stands to reason why now, the Cardinals find themselves in such a rare predicament.
