With the 2023 season being so disastrous for the St. Louis Cardinals, some around the game have begun to speculate whether or not the team will ultimately trade away pieces such as Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.
However, those rumors appear to have been debunked.
Though the Cardinals are 33-46 and languishing in last place in the NL Central, there appears to be no plan to trade Goldschmidt or Arenado.
On Wednesday, John Denton, who covers the Cardinals for MLB.com, discussed these rumors on 101 ESPN St. Louis and why it is highly unlikely that St. Louis will trade one or both of their cornerstones.
What are the odds that one of Paul Goldschmidt or Nolan Arenado are traded at the deadline?
According to #STLCards insider @JohnDenton555, “slim to none.” #BKandFerrario

Denton stated that if Goldschmidt is traded, the Cardinals would have to be searching for somebody to come in and replicate his success.
He reminded fans of what President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said in London, that the Cardinals are not looking to “blow up” their roster, but rather add to it and make it better.
Denton said that if the Cardinals are planning to do that, then trading Goldschmidt would be ill-advised.
Instead, Denton believes that if the Cardinals will do anything with Goldschmidt, it will be more akin to a potential contract extension.
Goldschmidt won the NL MVP Award last season after hitting .317 with 35 homers and 115 RBI.
Denton also commented that Mozeliak would not want it on his record that he traded the reigning MVP, especially after dealing away Sandy Alcantara and Randy Arozarena.
Finally, Denton closed his statement by saying that Goldschmidt is somebody the Cardinals should build around.
