NBA legend Carmelo Anthony turned heads last week when he said he wouldn’t exchange his Olympic gold medals for an NBA championship.
Speaking on the latest episode of “7PM in Brooklyn,” Anthony defended his statement and gave more insight into why he feels that way.
He said that “the impact” of winning gold medals with Team USA is massive and unlike anything else.
“Not everyone wins a gold medal,” Anthony said, reminding viewers that only a select handful of athletes have claimed such an honor.
Anthony won gold with Team USA three times in the Olympics and one time at the Americas Championship in 2007.
Those moments remain some of the biggest highlights of his career and he holds them very close to his heart.
He is absolutely correct when he says that few people receive such a distinct honor and it’s very hard to be part of a Team USA squad that claims gold.
There are many NBA fans who don’t understand why Anthony would hold onto his gold medals over a championship ring.
He did many things during his career but he was never able to win a title, which he deeply regrets.
But he has said his victories on behalf of America mean more than a championship because they represent the entire nation and not just one city, state, or team.
He understands the relevance and gravity of achieving such a feat for his country.
Anthony will forever be an NBA icon and because of his success in the Olympics, he will also be an Olympic hero forever.
