The Cleveland Cavaliers have just begun their search for a new head coach after firing J.B. Bickerstaff following the team’s disappointing showing in the second round of the playoffs against the Boston Celtics.

With a lot of tough decisions to make this offseason, everything starts with the coaching vacancy, and a new report says that the team has received permission to interview a well-respected assistant from the defending champions.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski shared that the Cavs have received permission to interview Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman, who has also met with the Los Angeles Lakers regarding their coaching opening as well.

Adelman has been an assistant with the Nuggets since 2017 and is the son of former NBA coach Rick Adelman, who won over 1,000 games as a coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 43-year-old is Denver’s top assistant and spent time as an assistant with the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves prior to joining Michael Malone’s staff in Denver.

Bickerstaff was Cleveland’s coach for nearly five years and the Cavs have a talented roster coming off a 48-win season, so Adelman would be stepping into an enviable situation that would make it easier to stomach leaving the defending champs.

This would be a substantial loss to the coaching staff for the Nuggets, albeit an unsurprising one.

This is just what happens when well-coached teams win championships, and if Adelman is the guy in Cleveland, it’ll be interesting to see how he follows in his father’s footsteps.
