Last offseason, the Minnesota Timberwolves made one of the most questionable moves in recent NBA history.
Not only did they pay way more than the usual market value to get Rudy Gobert, but they also paired him with Karl-Anthony Towns.
Granted, the Timberwolves thought they would cancel out each other’s flaws, with one being an elite rim protector and the other being a solid scorer, but it didn’t actually work like that.
It’s been more than a season since they’ve been together, and it gets more evident by the day that they’re not a good fit.
That’s why Hall of Famer Charles Barkley went as far as to call this move “one of the stupidest trades ever,” stating that it doesn’t make sense to have two seven-footers in a small man’s league, especially if neither of them is dominant offensively (via ClutchPoints).
“[Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert] in Minnesota can’t play together… You go get two guys over 7 feet tall in a little man’s league and either one of them are good enough on the offensive end, they’re not like Shaq.”

Barkley explained that neither of those players has a good offensive game in the post, and it’s evident that other teams can just stop them.
And even if other teams have issues guarding a stretch big like Towns, he also has several issues guarding rival players on the perimeter.
Truth be told, it doesn’t seem like that experiment is going to work out.
The Timberwolves are now stuck with Gobert, as they cannot take pennies on the dollar after all they gave for him, so moving on from Towns might be their next move, although his market value might also be at an all-time low right now.
