Chase Daniel Names Which Rookie QB Had The Best Debut

Quarterback-turned-analyst Chase Daniel spent over a decade in the NFL serving as a backup to Matthew Stafford, Alex Smith, Drew Brees, and Justin Herbert, so he is no stranger to observing great quarterback play and should have an eye for talent that few others have.

He recently broke down the rookie debuts of the stellar 2024 class and shared which rookie he believes had the best debut so far.

In a clip shared on X after Saturday night’s game, Daniel said that J.J. McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings had “THE best rookie debut” and teased a full breakdown of his performance, saying “The breakdown will be fun…dude can play.”

Daniel shared a highlight of McCarthy’s biggest play in Saturday’s 24-23 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, which was a 33-yard touchdown throw to Trent Sherfield Sr. deep down the right sideline.

McCarthy went 11-for-17 for 188 yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing an interception and running for 18 yards on two rushing attempts.

No. 1 pick Caleb Williams also looked great and went 4-for-7 for 95 yards in his debut for the Chicago Bears, and he was so great that Daniel immediately sat on the fence and walked back his McCarthy take under his original tweet.

You would think a career backup would back up his take a little longer than that.

Regardless, even though McCarthy played much more than Williams did (while also going against backups, while Williams went against starters), you can’t ignore the two touchdowns he threw.

He’ll have plenty of time to marinate behind Sam Darnold, but McCarthy might be ready to go sooner than many expected.
