In the eyes of many, the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are the favorites to win it all once again this season.
But there is a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the organization in the form of star pass rusher Chris Jones’ ongoing contract negotiations.
GM Brett Veach says he is “hopeful” that a deal will be agreed to soon so that Jones will end up suiting up for the team in Week 1, via ProFootballTalk.

“Certainly hopeful for that,” Veach said, via PFT and the Chiefs. “We have been in communication, actually just in the last two days we’ve been in more communication. We’re going to continue to press on and work hard. A lot of respect on both sides of this thing. It’s been well stated how we feel about Chris, and he feels the same way. Again, we’re just going to keep working on this thing. We’re looking forward to next Thursday and hopefully he’s in the lineup, and he’s ready to go.”
Jones has spent all of his seven NFL seasons with the Chiefs, and he has played both defensive tackle and defensive end during his time with the team.
Last season, he had 15.5 sacks, tying his career high, as well as 17 tackles for loss and 29 quarterback hits as he made his fourth straight Pro Bowl and got his first All-Pro First-Team nod.
Getting a deal done is of paramount importance, as Kansas City already lost two of their key contributors this offseason.
JuJu Smith-Schuster, their most productive wide receiver in 2022, left to join the New England Patriots, while star offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is now a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, the team Kansas City barely got past in last season’s AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs will have their work cut out for them this year, as the rest of the conference is absolutely loaded.
It will be important for them to get Jones’ contract extension taken care of very soon and start the season strong, as they will face the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets within the first four weeks of the schedule.
