The Kansas City Chiefs gave up on one of their most volatile players.
While clearly talented and with strong potential, Kadarius Toney’s inconsistency and lack of availability eventually sealed his fate at Arrowhead Stadium.
He failed to make the 53-man roster after being acquired midway through the 2022 season.
Nonetheless, as disappointing as it was to watch him leave, Chiefs GM Brett Veach admitted that they may not have been able to accomplish what they accomplished if it wasn’t for him (via ESPN):
The Chiefs gave up a third and a sixth-round pick in return for the former first-round pick.
Toney, who failed to live up to the hype with the New York Giants as well, wound up making 20 regular-season appearances for the Chiefs, hauling in 41 receptions and logging three touchdowns.
The 25-year-old struggled with drops, some miscues, and injuries, but he paid his dues.
Now as a free agent, there’s still a chance that another team will give him a look eventually, but given the reports about his work ethic and character, it seems like he’s going to have to prove to teams that he’s willing to be coached.
And even if that’s not the case, he already has two Super Bowl rings to his name.
