The Kansas City Chiefs have high hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions heading into the 2023 NFL season, with Patrick Mahomes and company as confident as ever in their squad and their chances of competing with the best of the best in the league.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst this week, only a few days before the Chiefs will host the Detroit Lions in Kansas City, with superstar tight end Travis Kelce going down with a knee injury in practice.

As arguably the greatest tight end in NFL history, who still likely has a few more years in his prime with the Chiefs, Kelce is important to what Kansas City does offensively.

Losing the perennial Pro Bowler to an injury before the start of the season is a costly loss for the Chiefs, but it remains to be seen how long he’ll be out or if he’ll miss any time at all.

Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore talked about the play in which Kelce hurt his knee, via Nate Taylor of The Athletic.

Skyy Moore on Travis Kelce’s hyperextended knee injury during today’s practice: “I was in on that play, so I was running a route. I was talking to somebody & he was limping, just walking off the field. It was a good sign to see him get up by himself & get off the field.”

As Moore points out, it was a good sign to see Kelce get up by himself and walk off the field on his own power, as that bodes well for the severity of the knee injury.

If Kelce had to be taken off the field on a cart or held up by teammates to get off the field, it would’ve been another story entirely.

The real question is whether the Chiefs can get him on the field for Thursday or let him sit with a little extra time to get ready for Week 2 on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
