After falling short to the eighth-seeded Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals last year, the Boston Celtics were determined to make some moves during the NBA offseason in order to upgrade their roster around stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Fortunately for Boston, the Celtics brass was able to do just that, as they brought in veteran scorer Kristaps Porzingis and then added defensive-minded guard Jrue Holiday into the mix.
The addition of these two veteran players during the offseason turned out to be game-changing moves, as the Celtics are now sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings with the best record in the league at 46-12.
With the Celtics firing on all cylinders right now, the expectation is that Tatum will lead this group back to the NBA Finals with a great chance to win the franchise’s 18th NBA title, which would top the arch-rival Los Angeles Lakers for the most in NBA history.
Interestingly enough, Chris Broussard of FOX Sports makes the case that Tatum is similar to Dirk Nowitzki in terms of his needing to win a championship to prove how great of a player he is via First Things First.
“There’s 2 tracks: 1. You’re so great, you better win a title (Luka). 2. You have to win a title for us to know how great you are (Dirk). We knew Dirk was great, but he needed to win a title to go to the next level. That’s where Jayson Tatum is.”

Fortunately for Tatum, he’s got an ideal opportunity to win his first championship this season, with the Celtics cruising through the regular season and paving their way to a top seed in the East ahead of the NBA playoffs.
The toughest challenge for the Celtics might be who comes out of the Western Conference, which could be the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets or an upstart team like the Minnesota Timberwolves or Oklahoma City Thunder.
