On Monday, after a weekend in which he weighed the pros and cons of taking the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job, Dan Hurley decided that it wasn’t time to leave the UConn Huskies, as he desired a chance at winning three straight National Championships with the program.
Despite being offered a six-year deal worth $70 million, Hurley chose to decline the chance to coach superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis to return to the program that is currently considered to be the best in college basketball with a good chance of winning it all again next season.
Although it wasn’t a total surprise to see Hurley turn down the Lakers’ offer, considering what he’d be leaving at UConn, it was surprising to see what the team’s offer was when it was originally reported that he was offered $100 million guaranteed.
Clearly, that wasn’t the offer that was given, and even though he would’ve been one of the highest-paid head coaches in the NBA, Chris Broussard of FOX Sports thinks the Lakers should’ve offered him a deal that he couldn’t refuse, via “First Things First.”
“$11.5 million dollars a year?! You’re the Lakers! This is the two-time National Champion. This is really for post-LeBron. Then make the man an offer he can’t refuse,” Broussard said.

If it hadn’t been reported that the Lakers were offering $100 million to Hurley, there probably wouldn’t have been as much of an uproar on Monday when he decided to stay at UConn.
Despite Hurley’s success at UConn, it is hard to justify offering $100 million to a college coach who hasn’t coached on the NBA level, but Lakers fans aren’t happy, and the media seems to be supporting their displeasure with how things went down.
